If you only read one thing this week, make it this. The biggest stuff happening across town this week:

You could spend Saturday eating pasta at home, or you could drive 20 minutes up the road and enter what is basically, Italy.

Festa Italiana takes over Hunter Street and the Apex Town Hall campus Saturday with Italian food, wine, Bellinis, beer, live music, cooking demonstrations, street vendors and a full kids zone. There’s even a cannoli-eating contest, because apparently simply eating a cannoli wasn’t competitive enough.

This is the festival’s eighth year, and it has grown into one of the Triangle’s bigger celebrations of Italian culture. Expect plenty of food vendors, a dedicated culinary stage, Italian music throughout the day and enough red, white and green to briefly make you forget you’re in Wake County.

First Sip take: This is probably the best worth-the-drive event on the calendar this weekend. Go hungry. Stay for the music. Consider the cannoli contest only if you’re prepared to live with the consequences.

National Night Out puts the Fuquay-Varina Police Department in the Target parking lot for three hours of vehicle displays, equipment, safety demonstrations and face time with local officers. The Town also lists food options, activities and participation from other law-enforcement agencies, service organizations and local businesses.

McGruff the Crime Dog will be there too, maintaining a public career that has now outlasted several generations of children’s television.

The vehicles and equipment make this an especially great stop for families with kids who want to see more than a patrol car passing through traffic. Arrive near 5:00 if you want time to work through the displays before dinner, or make it a quick first stop before Friday’s later plans.

If your old iPod had even a little My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy or Paramore on it, Saturday has your name all over it.

Oaklyn Springs is hosting an Emo Night Market from 4:00–9:00 PM at its Fuquay location, pairing the brewery with an evening market and a healthy excuse to revisit your teenage music taste.

Grab a beer, wander the vendors and embrace the black-eyeliner energy. Between Festa Italiana during the day and this at night, there is a surprisingly good case for simply blocking off your entire Saturday.

This is exactly the kind of Saturday-night plan Fuquay could use more of.

We normally make you earn a trip outside Fuquay, but beer is persuasive.

Bombshell Beer Company is going full Oktoberfest Saturday with festive food and drinks, pretzel necklaces and stein-hoisting competitions. The Butcher’s Market is handling food, while RAAD O.G. plays live from 4:00–7:00 PM.

The celebration starts at noon, so you can make this an afternoon stop before heading elsewhere Saturday night, or stay long enough to discover that holding a giant beer stein straight in front of you is considerably harder than German people make it look.

Ashley’s Art Gallery is hosting painter Luke Buck for a free Saturday showing centered on original paintings and limited-edition prints.

The gallery describes Buck’s work through nostalgic Americana landscapes, wildlife and North Carolina scenes, including familiar subjects such as Yates Mill. The afternoon also gives visitors a chance to actually meet the Indiana artist rather than simply walk through a standing display.

This is a three-hour reception rather than an all-day art festival, so it works well as a Main Street stop between lunch and Saturday evening plans. Give yourself more than a quick lap if you want to study the originals or speak with Buck.

Smith Farm Goat Sanctuary’s Create Series hands each participant a reusable canvas tote to design and paint during a two-hour workshop.

Instructors will help with colors, patterns and techniques while the sanctuary’s goats roam nearby. The event is open to all ages, so the artistic standard appears to be personal satisfaction rather than gallery readiness.

Tickets are $24 plus a 60-cent service fee. The sanctuary ordinarily opens only for scheduled events and private tours, so the workshop also provides access to the farm without booking a separate group encounter.

Plan to stay for the full session if you want time to work through a design instead of leaving with a tote that says, visually, that lunch ran long.

Smile takes the Centennial Square stage Thursday for the third straight week of Fuquay’s fall FM2FV run.

The outdoor concert is free, with food-truck offerings and local brews available throughout the evening. The Town has the band playing from 6:00–9:00 PM, giving downtown a full evening rather than a short after-work set.

Bring a chair, but leave the cooler at home. Arriving before 6:00 should give you time to settle in and handle dinner before the music starts.

If three hours isn’t enough, Sam Trebing starts at Aviator TapHouse at 7:00 and Brian Jones’ open mic begins at the Hangar Bar at 8:00.

Friday and Saturday are concentrated around Aviator’s separate stages, followed by a much quieter Sunday. The unusual part comes midweek: Aviator has confirmed performers Tuesday through Thursday, and Smile adds a free downtown concert Thursday before the later sets begin.
